Help with download speed?

my speed test shows that my dl spped is 186.3 KB/s and my upload is 17.9KB/s. but i am downloading a file which is 488 MB and is downloading at 177-179 KB/s. not evn reaching my speed test dl speed!!! plus i am using a download accelator-"Free Download Manager". Pls help by guiding me to improve my download speed!

Sounds like you are pulling at the max speed that the server is sending.... remember, just because the speed test says 186, 177 is pretty good....

This may be because you have kept wrong settings in your FDM software.

It is a good software. make maximum speed in that a auto/maximum option.

secondly if u r storing it to hard disk drive which is almost full then your download may be faster but hard disk storage speed may be less. So store it to a drive which is free.

lastly try using other download managers. But I think Free Download Manager (FDM) is best. So it is up to you to decide. try it out. may be it will work. Who knows?

Anyways, if you are downloading from Limewire, or a torrent, even from itunes, it will ALWAYS not download as fast as your allotted speed.

Other things must connect to the internet, and are connected all the time.
You will never reach your max speed. Unfortunately that's the way it is. For eg. i'm on an 8mb (megabit) connection but in reality it's an UPTO 8mb connection and the best speed i've got was around 700k/s but that only ever happened once. Usually my speeds are between 450-550k/s which i'm quite happy with.

My download speeds runs a constant 2mbps, If I do a speed test before downloading a torrent I will get 2mbps, when I start downloading with pleanty of peers I will get in or around 20kbps download speed at best, Limewire Pro is the same, I get a max of around 10kbps.

I never had this trouble on AOL broadband, just BT broadband, Infact a dial up connection is quicker, What use is broadband for downloading if your speed drops to 20kbps when you try to download a file, encrytpion is on on utorrent but makes no difference

uTorrent and other Torrent programs can only be maxxed out if you're settings are correct. Torrent speeds can vary because of seeders, you're settings, how much you torrent/upload and your luck.

Check the port that the program uses to connect to peers. Once you know this go into your router preferences through your browser (address is usually something like 192.168.1.1).

There should be a section in there with port forwarding. Enter the port details and save the changes. Try rebooting the computer and open the software again.

as far as limewire is concerned it depends on how many hosts you are downloading off i'm on virgin media broadband and it's alot faster at downloading from limewire than yours mine gets up to between 70-90 kbps
There are many factors that can cause this.

First thing I would check would be the firewall. This does not allow other users to connect to you therefore lowering your share level on the torrent programs and limewire. You need to enable port forwarding on the router that you are using to allow these programs to run at their fastest speed.

And Dial up is in no way faster than how you are downloading now. Not even close.

It may say 56kb/s for dial up, but that is BITS per second not BYTES per second.

Yes, it is weird that they measure connection speed in Bits but your download speed in Bytes.

There are 8 bits to a byte, so you have to divide the total download speed of your connection by 8 to get your maximum download speed.

The max a Dial up modem is able to download at is around 4-5Kilo BYTES per second.

I initially downloaded an older version of limewire and had absolutely no problems with it. I downloaded a couple of things, and everything was fine-- no viruses, no popups, no spyware. Later when I came back to the computer I was asked if I wanted to upgrade to the latest version of limewire. I opted for the upgrade, but after the upgrade I did not download anything else from it. The truth is I did not have a chance to download anything from it because I immediately began getting popups, e.t.c. upon which I uninstalled it. But I just want to know how I suddenly started getting popups and viruses just because I upgraded my limewire. Somebody said that the viruses do not even come from limewire itself, but rather from the things you download. In addition, the only thing I have EVER downloaded AT ALL from any version of limewire was a few songs. So how did I get viruses?

You have have downloaded a non-legit (lol?) version of limewire.

Also, any surfing *can* lead to infection without proper protection
Spyware and viruses could have easily attached themselves to the upgrade from Limewire, in which case you wouldn't notice until the crappy junk started to happen to your computer. The sucky part about it is that the actual virus/spyware can be ANYWHERE in your system. The only thing I can recommend is that you do a System Restore to a previous date of the download of the Limewire upgrade. I hope this helps.

Go to start%26gt;all program%26gt;accessories%26gt;system tools and system restore and restore to the day before the virus got on ur computer. It should get rid of it :P

Problem with Download Accelerators or what???

Since one month, I have been downloading a lot from dailymotion.com and youtube.com, using DownloadHelper. Well, DownloadHelper is an add-on in Firefox, which lets you download the streaming videos sort like the grabber. I used to copy the link and download it using DAP. Now, it doesn't accelerates any file at all. DAP asks me for authentication, my usual username and password for those sites doesn't seems to work. The same happened with youtube.com two weeks before dailymotion.com. I am not able to accelerate any downloads from this sites. I even changed my Download Accelerator to IDM, but still doesn't work.

How can I solve this problem??

You cannot recover a botched download.

The reason is that the download has a built-in checking system to see if it is intact.

The checking system works on a handshaking method of sending a "code" during the downloading to see if all bits "add up" to what has been sent.

The method is called "handshaking" and the code check is called "checksum".

If during the download the "checksum" doesn't jive, the "handshake" attempts to "fix" the download.

BUT that is not your problem, you should have asked, Why did my computer freezed (freeze, froze), or lock up?

1. Maybe you ran out of space on the hard drive.

2. You probably ran out of RAM (Random Access Memory), and as a result the comp. freezed ;-)

If you intend to do more downloading (especially big files), you should consider upgrading to prevent this kind of hassle.

Just watch out for KB (Kilobyte files or 1 or below MegaByte files), as they contain porn that people like to upload and spyware to infect others that are novice users, unless its a .midi file, and if you find only 3 or lower results, and none of them are above 4 MB, than don't download them, also if you can't right click and browse the host, than delete them. And downloading music illegaly is often with Limewire, so that's why theres alot of porn, spyware, trojans to fool novice users.

Luckily, I have real-time scanners before it gets downloaded, and I know which files are fake and real.

Apparently, you can also review/hear/pre play before you download, so if you download music and hear nothing, chances are it is porn, so stop your download, and voila it is gone.

But you should legitly buy the music piece, theres lots of debates of why music should/shouldn't be free, anyways, just my experience.

How long do you leave your computer? It may be because your computer hibernates or goes in a stand-by. Try to adjust your power saving settings.

Unfortunately, you can't accelerate the rate of download, all you can do is to choose the file with the more seeders and better health :)

Movie Maker is part of the Service Pak 2 upgrade. If you don't have SP2, it's a big upgrade, even with high-speed.
That's something that is usually installed with your operating system. If you have an OS disk, try and do a repair. I don't think its available as a download.

Everytime I download anything I make sure it goes to my desktop. Once the download has finished it automatically deletes itself from the computer. Firefox isn't download video pages for me, specifically those from Youtube.

When I try to get a video, the Download management screen pops up and it immediately says that the .flv file is downloaded to the Desktop, but it hasn't.

It just says Download Complete - When I try to open the file from the download manager, I get Cannot find file...file has been moved, renamed,deleted...etc

BTW, I had updated to 0.7 and then downgraded down to 0.4

It sounds like you are on dial up, I get the same problem. This problem is the same as the reason why on line we can't watch most of the time You Tube videos. They start playing then pause to load some more start again then pause then play a little more then go blank like they are done because it seems they give up on dial up.

I suspect this is happening with downloading them as well, the slow speed we get dropped and so the down loader has no choice but to say complete when there is nothing downloading anymore.
I have a similar problem before. What I did...

1. Change the destination of folder ...

In your firefox, go to Tools%26gt;Options%26gt;Main

Change it to "My Documents"

2. When I download, I choose the option of "Save" instead of "Open"....

that is because "Open" only puts the file on a temporary folder and when you exit the firefox, it is automatically removed.

3. I put a firefox add on called FasterFox Page Download Timer... To monitor my download. Go to mozilla website and search for it.

That happened to me before. The issue was with my harddrive, it continued to have spotty memory, and loose bits of data. Everything was great after I got it replaced, and the O.S. installed cleanly.

A good download manager for multiple links?

I'm wanting to download a large file off the internet via my Rapidshare account. The only problem is that this software is split into 80 different .rar's meaning 80 different links!

I personally find it quite boring copying and pasting all those links. Is there a download manager which is able to automatically see those links and download them?

Because of some system update, my computer rebooted late at night and I didn't notice it. When I tried to resume the download, it tries to reconnect for a while and fails.

If you can resume the download try delete the previous file. Clear all the cache and cookies then download the file again. If the problem recurring try download with other download accelerator ie Internet Download Manager.

hi i did a speed test for my internet speeds and it came back with a result with a download speed of 256kbps (so 32 kB/s).

I use uTorrent for downloading but never really pass a speed of more then 27 kB/s, what should be the setting for a 256kbps speed in uTorrent that i should use?

I would say 27kbps in 256kbps is pretty decent. Try during the off peak hours and you may get some increase in the download spead.

I use Utorrent also it will pick up the max speed on its own. Lets say you wanna download something from me and im logged on with dial up thank god im not. You could only download as fast as I upload that slows your speed down.

Another analogy If we are on a one lane road Im in front of you driving 30 mph and you are behind me driving a lotus or whatever you wouldnt be able to pass me or get over 30 right? same concept with your download speed...

Ok, I just got my computer in September and for the last 3 months I have had a problem with downloading. I can't download anything but I'm not sure what it is. When I first got my computer I had trouble with it, but I eventually figured it out (I was just guessing, and I'm not quite sure what I did). However now, I can't download period. I've tried to download mandatory articles to read for class, limewire, powerpoint presentations for class, games... anything and pretty much everything, just to try to get it to work. I've even had a friend send me pictures to my yahoo email, and you have to download them to see them and those didn't work either. I've tried to run, open, and save it. I'm not sure what is wrong. I have tried to download to multiple places as well, and I saw that it pops up on the desktop as an icon, but disappears and once I was fast enough to click on it, but it told me the shortcut was broken. sounds like you may either:

? have screwed up DNS

? have exceeded your download limits set by your ISP

if it's the latter then you will have to contact your ISP (you mentioned comcast or something?) and talk to them about it.

if its the former i have no idea how to fix it. try searching google, ask.com, metor, yahoo answers and if you still get no results try portforward.com

I have no idea what "download manager" you put on your computer, so I can't tell you anything except that mine downloads everything I try to download, with a few exceptions. Some websites, Microsoft, download.com and others, do not allow download managers. You can only try to download and if the manager takes it, then it does, and should speed up your downloading experience.

Check around to see how a file is transfered by http protocol and you would find those BS from download manager.

I was wondering if download accelerators really deserve to be called so! I have used them all - Download Accelerator Plus, Flashget, Free Download Manager et cetera - and none of them managed to accelerate my download speeds at all! All they could be used for is to schedule downloads and resume them, a facility that is not available in the download managers of all the browsers that I have used and which are, in all other aspects, just as good.

Have I had unusually bad experiences or these softwares are really worthless? What do you think?

It will not work for all. If the bandwidth is good and the download is delayed by any obstacles then it may work well. If you do not have a proper bandwidth to download the file and at the same time you are using downloading accelerators then its foolishness.
Yeah not all of them work well, the only one that i actually thought that worked good, was IDM(Internet Download Manager) it's only a trial though last time i checked.
If you download at speeds lower than the maximum bandwidth you have, and the site is capable of resuming, a DA will start more than one piece of the file at once, so you'll be filling your bandwidth and downloading faster. If the site isn't capable of resuming, it won't work and you'll still get a single stream. If you're downloading at your full bandwidth already (a good connection to the site), you can't download any faster.

Most sites these days are capable of resuming, and most connections don't run at full bandwidth, so DAs speed up downloads for most people.

Yes they work, but it depends on server you are downloading also. Typically these tools work by downloading a parts file from different sources. They will use partial download feature. If only one server is serving the file, there will be no speed. If there is more than one server, these tools will download the parts from every server, and will combine them later.

Then it also depends on bandwidth also. I mean if server is sending the file at its full bandwidth, you won't see any fastness. IMHO they are useful occasionally.
