Help with download speed?

my speed test shows that my dl spped is 186.3 KB/s and my upload is 17.9KB/s. but i am downloading a file which is 488 MB and is downloading at 177-179 KB/s. not evn reaching my speed test dl speed!!! plus i am using a download accelator-"Free Download Manager". Pls help by guiding me to improve my download speed!

Sounds like you are pulling at the max speed that the server is sending.... remember, just because the speed test says 186, 177 is pretty good....

This may be because you have kept wrong settings in your FDM software.

It is a good software. make maximum speed in that a auto/maximum option.

secondly if u r storing it to hard disk drive which is almost full then your download may be faster but hard disk storage speed may be less. So store it to a drive which is free.

lastly try using other download managers. But I think Free Download Manager (FDM) is best. So it is up to you to decide. try it out. may be it will work. Who knows?

Anyways, if you are downloading from Limewire, or a torrent, even from itunes, it will ALWAYS not download as fast as your allotted speed.

Other things must connect to the internet, and are connected all the time.
You will never reach your max speed. Unfortunately that's the way it is. For eg. i'm on an 8mb (megabit) connection but in reality it's an UPTO 8mb connection and the best speed i've got was around 700k/s but that only ever happened once. Usually my speeds are between 450-550k/s which i'm quite happy with.

My download speeds runs a constant 2mbps, If I do a speed test before downloading a torrent I will get 2mbps, when I start downloading with pleanty of peers I will get in or around 20kbps download speed at best, Limewire Pro is the same, I get a max of around 10kbps.

I never had this trouble on AOL broadband, just BT broadband, Infact a dial up connection is quicker, What use is broadband for downloading if your speed drops to 20kbps when you try to download a file, encrytpion is on on utorrent but makes no difference

uTorrent and other Torrent programs can only be maxxed out if you're settings are correct. Torrent speeds can vary because of seeders, you're settings, how much you torrent/upload and your luck.

Check the port that the program uses to connect to peers. Once you know this go into your router preferences through your browser (address is usually something like 192.168.1.1).

There should be a section in there with port forwarding. Enter the port details and save the changes. Try rebooting the computer and open the software again.

as far as limewire is concerned it depends on how many hosts you are downloading off i'm on virgin media broadband and it's alot faster at downloading from limewire than yours mine gets up to between 70-90 kbps
There are many factors that can cause this.

First thing I would check would be the firewall. This does not allow other users to connect to you therefore lowering your share level on the torrent programs and limewire. You need to enable port forwarding on the router that you are using to allow these programs to run at their fastest speed.

And Dial up is in no way faster than how you are downloading now. Not even close.

It may say 56kb/s for dial up, but that is BITS per second not BYTES per second.

Yes, it is weird that they measure connection speed in Bits but your download speed in Bytes.

There are 8 bits to a byte, so you have to divide the total download speed of your connection by 8 to get your maximum download speed.

The max a Dial up modem is able to download at is around 4-5Kilo BYTES per second.

I initially downloaded an older version of limewire and had absolutely no problems with it. I downloaded a couple of things, and everything was fine-- no viruses, no popups, no spyware. Later when I came back to the computer I was asked if I wanted to upgrade to the latest version of limewire. I opted for the upgrade, but after the upgrade I did not download anything else from it. The truth is I did not have a chance to download anything from it because I immediately began getting popups, e.t.c. upon which I uninstalled it. Needless to say the viruses/popups are still here, and my system is running rediculously slow. But I just want to know how I suddenly started getting popups and viruses just because I upgraded my limewire. Somebody said that the viruses do not even come from limewire itself, but rather from the things you download. In addition, the only thing I have EVER downloaded AT ALL from any version of limewire was a few songs. So how did I get viruses?

You have have downloaded a non-legit (lol?) version of limewire.

Also, any surfing *can* lead to infection without proper protection
Spyware and viruses could have easily attached themselves to the upgrade from Limewire, in which case you wouldn't notice until the crappy junk started to happen to your computer. The sucky part about it is that the actual virus/spyware can be ANYWHERE in your system. The only thing I can recommend is that you do a System Restore to a previous date of the download of the Limewire upgrade. I hope this helps.

Go to start%26gt;all program%26gt;accessories%26gt;system tools and system restore and restore to the day before the virus got on ur computer. It should get rid of it :P

Problem with Download Accelerators or what???

Since one month, I have been downloading a lot from dailymotion.com and youtube.com, using DownloadHelper. Well, DownloadHelper is an add-on in Firefox, which lets you download the streaming videos sort like the grabber. I used to copy the link and download it using DAP. Now, it doesn't accelerates any file at all. DAP asks me for authentication, my usual username and password for those sites doesn't seems to work. The same happened with youtube.com two weeks before dailymotion.com. I am not able to accelerate any downloads from this sites. I even changed my Download Accelerator to IDM, but still doesn't work.

How can I solve this problem??

You cannot recover a botched download.

The reason is that the download has a built-in checking system to see if it is intact.

The checking system works on a handshaking method of sending a "code" during the downloading to see if all bits "add up" to what has been sent.

The method is called "handshaking" and the code check is called "checksum".

If during the download the "checksum" doesn't jive, the "handshake" attempts to "fix" the download.

BUT that is not your problem, you should have asked, Why did my computer freezed (freeze, froze), or lock up?

1. Maybe you ran out of space on the hard drive.

2. You probably ran out of RAM (Random Access Memory), and as a result the comp. freezed ;-)

If you intend to do more downloading (especially big files), you should consider upgrading to prevent this kind of hassle.

Just watch out for KB (Kilobyte files or 1 or below MegaByte files), as they contain porn that people like to upload and spyware to infect others that are novice users, unless its a .midi file, and if you find only 3 or lower results, and none of them are above 4 MB, than don't download them, also if you can't right click and browse the host, than delete them. And downloading music illegaly is often with Limewire, so that's why theres alot of porn, spyware, trojans to fool novice users.

Luckily, I have real-time scanners before it gets downloaded, and I know which files are fake and real.

Apparently, you can also review/hear/pre play before you download, so if you download music and hear nothing, chances are it is porn, so stop your download, and voila it is gone.

But you should legitly buy the music piece, theres lots of debates of why music should/shouldn't be free, anyways, just my experience.

Just cos you object to something doesn't make it illegal. If it's pornography thats legal for over 18's in a lot of countries then the authorities are a lot more likely to be worried about bigger problems like child pornography. How long do you leave your computer? It may be because your computer hibernates or goes in a stand-by. Try to adjust your power saving settings.

Unfortunately, you can't accelerate the rate of download, all you can do is to choose the file with the more seeders and better health :)

Movie Maker is part of the Service Pak 2 upgrade. If you don't have SP2, it's a big upgrade, even with high-speed.
That's something that is usually installed with your operating system. If you have an OS disk, try and do a repair. I don't think its available as a download.

Everytime I download anything I make sure it goes to my desktop. Once the download has finished it automatically deletes itself from the computer. No trace is found when a search of whole computer is done. Is there anyway I can fix this please with in the settings anywhere?
